System Verification Engineer

Quality is one of Sonos’ highest priorities. As a System Verification Engineer you will be responsible for owning the verification of all the relevant hardware subsystems which make up our products and for ensuring that the system-level hardware product quality meets or exceeds the level that our customers have come to expect. You will be an integral member of the product development team, defining verification strategies, implementing and debugging individual verification tests designed to ensure that our hardware functions as specified. You will have overall responsibility for hardware quality and performance verification throughout the product lifecycle - from development to end-of-production. 


This position will specifically focus on the qualification of all electrical, mechanical and packaging components/sub-assemblies that will be procured by our contract manufacturers in Malaysia. Responsibilities will include writing qualification plans and defining test schedules, developing automated testing, communicating the test results, documenting and investigating failures, troubleshooting found issues to resolution with the product design teams, and working with our manufacturing teams to ensure both a smooth transition into volume manufacturing and support continuous production.

What You’ll Do
  • Qualify all parts or subassemblies sourced from local Malaysia suppliers on Sonos products built in Malaysia factories:

    • Focus mostly on mechanical or packaging parts; some electro-mechanical parts may be included

    • Compare locally sourced parts against Sonos specs and primary-source parts or golden samples

      • This work will require a solid understanding of material properties and measurement methodologies.

    • Interpret existing Sonos hardware verification test procedures and develop regression test suites appropriate for the parts being qualified

    • Create qualification plans and Engineering Change Requests (ECR) for all part qualifications

    • Track all qualification efforts to completion

    • Approve Engineering Change Orders (ECO) for completed qualifications

  • Assist Sonos Manufacturing Test Engineers and Quality Engineers at Malaysia factories:

    • Troubleshoot production test failures at the system level where the root cause is design-related or suspected of be design-related

    • Provide technical interpretation of product design intent, as needed

    • Resolve any production yield issues in the Malaysia factories that have been determined to be design-related

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively:

    • Oversee the actions of any Malaysia factory personnel assigned to execute qualification plans and/or assist with ECRs

    • Collaborate with other Sonos Product Development Engineers, especially the CaSE and HWV teams, for ongoing product development, redesign and support

Skills You’ll Need
  • The ideal candidate will have a system-level focus (i.e., able to see the “big picture”) and be able to demonstrate a broad range of Electrical and Mechanical skills. A willingness to learn additional Mechanical skills is highly preferred.


    • Mechanical skills or experience:

      • View 3D CAD models

      • Accurately perform physical measurements and tolerance analysis

      • Working knowledge of tool design, injection-molding and casting

      • Familiarity with paint finish and durability testing

      • Experience with cable assembly design is a plus.

      • Audio/acoustic expertise is a strong plus.

    • Electrical skills or experience:

      • Read schematics

      • Interpret PCB layout files

      • Perform electrical measurements using standard test equipment, such as oscilloscope, multimeter or spectrum analyzer

      • General knowledge of electronic devices (analog, digital, power supplies)

      • Experience with wireless communication protocols (WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC) is a strong plus.

    • System-level skills or experience:

      • Experience with Linux operating system

      • Familiarity with scripting languages for automated testing. (Perl is preferred; Python and TCL/Expect are a strong plus.)

      • System integration of multiple subsystems, including software, is a strong plus.

    • Manufacturing skills or experience:

      • Working knowledge of statistical process control (SPC)

      • Familiarity with test fixture design

    • Interpersonal skills:

      • Excellent cross-functional communication skills with a multi-site product development team 

      • Excellent written communication skills in English

      • Good verbal communication skills in English. Chinese is a strong plus.
