Summer Internship 2019 | Software Development Engineer in Test, Embedded (Seattle, Boston)

Department: Software

Location: Boston, Seattle

Req#: 4741

The Embedded team develops and maintains a common test framework and test tools for the embedded software organization.  We own this test framework as well as frameworks for uploading/viewing test metrics and for handling the queuing and running of tests.

Based on the business needs this summer, potential projects could include building a test results comparator, improving the discovery/documentation of our test methods to be more engaging, or ingesting our test metrics into a new data/visualization stack called ELK (Elastic Search/Logstash/Kibana).  There are many opportunities to learn new technologies on this team!

This internship will focus on getting plugged into the embedded software community at Sonos, gathering requirements from various teams for your project, designing and developing code for that project, and then demo’ing it to the test teams.  In addition to this project-specific work, you will be code reviewing other test team member’s work, integrating into the embedded test culture, and learning about the software development process at Sonos.

About You

You're not like everyone else.

You bring a unique perspective to the table. Transparency tops your list of values. Your smarts and creativity are off the charts, matched only by your humility. You want to collaborate with a team of diverse talent. You proactively contribute to a culture of respect and inclusion.

You enjoy a challenge.

Inquisitive and focused, you see every challenge as an opportunity. You're ambitious and unafraid to make mistakes because you learn from them and bounce back quickly. You don't stop until you get it right. "Impossible" isn't in your vocabulary. You're more interested in creating the future than waiting for it.

You love to listen.

You start every interaction from a place of listening and seeking to understand. You're culturally connected. You remember your first concert. You can readily recommend a binge-worthy show on Netflix, Hulu or HBO. You can't sit in traffic without a great audiobook, podcast or album. You can make a killer playlist. Your idea of a good weekend includes watching a movie or playing a video game.

What You’ll Do
  • You will be an integral part of the Embedded team, participating in design reviews, code reviews, stand up meetings, team meetings, etc.
  • Your project may vary depending on business need, but in general will include all major parts of the software development life cycle (requirements gathering, design, reviews, implementation, demos).  This will involve time spent with the Automation team ramping up on the frameworks and tools we own as well as time interacting with other embedded teams across the org.
  • You will deliver several prototypes as you complete your project and iterate on those as needed based on the user feedback.
  • You will work with your manager to field and pare down requirements for the product so that you can deliver a product of optimal value.

Skills You’ll Need
  • Experience programming in Python or Java (or other object-oriented language)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience collaborating; we are looking for team players who love working with and learning from other engineers!
  • Some knowledge of (or interest in!) automated software testing,  particularly related to test frameworks and tools

How to Audition
