Security Engineer - Device Firmware

Department: Software

Location: Boston

Req#: 3359

We are looking for an engineer to join the Security software development team who can help analyze and understand our current and future products to identify security threats, risks, and issues, and work with the team in solving these problems and designing in and implementing security at all levels.  Sonos’ software team is roughly organized into:

    • Control applications (Android, iOS, Mac, Windows)
    • Device firmware (software running on the Sonos players, including Linux, device drivers, and low-level hardware support)
    • Web Applications, Services, and Platforms

You will help make sure that security of these areas is cutting edge, consistent, scalable, resilient, maintainable, and especially usable as ease of use is key to our products.  This role is focused on the device firmware.
About You

Our band is large. And while there’s plenty of room for all kinds of personalities and skill sets to succeed, there are certain qualities that will help you thrive here.

Like a never-accept-less work ethic. An exceptionally low ego-to-talent ratio (none of the first, tons of the latter). A relentless craving to push past your limits and try new things. The smarts and the humble confidence to take on big challenges, make mistakes fast and early, embrace tough feedback, then recover quickly with fresh, startlingly perfect solutions. A fearless willingness to defend great work. And a tendency to totally geek out on music.

If this sounds like you, read on and let’s connect soon.

What You’ll Do
We want someone who is excited about security!  You may have security experience with technologies such as digital signatures, encryption, SSL, and PKI.  You at least are very interested in learning about these things.

You enjoy digging into complex systems -- helping identify potential attack vectors and their remediation sounds like fun.  The Sonos ecosystem is large and growing and security must be a consideration at all levels – you agree with this statement and are excited at the opportunity to help fulfill it.

One of the tricky things about security is that increased security often means increased complexity for the user.  A clean, comfortable user experience is central to our products, and maintaining this is a primary requirement even as security is ratcheted up.  This makes sense to you and you can bring usability to the forefront in your thinking and designs.

This is an opportunity to work with and learn from top-notch security engineers on a line of popular consumer products.  Your code will help secure millions of devices, which is very cool.  This role is initially focused on our embedded system products, but there is potential to grow into other areas, like cloud and mobile.  The keys to the role are passion for security and the ability to learn quickly.
Skills You’ll Need
  • Some experience with, and definite interest in, security areas such as:
      • Security architecture and design
      • Network, applications, and systems security
      • Cryptographic algorithms and systems
      • Platform hardening
      • Identity and trust management (authentication, authorization)
      • Web services and platforms
      • PII (Personally Identifiable Information) and Storage/Sharing
  • Can write reliable, extensible, and maintainable software
  • C/C++
  • Fast learner
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking and/or IEEE 802.11/WiFi is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Thrives in fast-paced, results-oriented environment
