Principal Hardware Product Manager

Department: Product Management

Location: Boston, Santa Barbara, Seattle

Req#: 2852

At Sonos, we strive to create the ultimate home listening experience and fill every home with music. Our products are an essential part of this experience.  We’re looking for a Principal Product Manager that will set strategy and drive teams to shape the future of music in the connected home, and in this role, you will be the leader and champion of the next Sonos player we bring to market.

This position is a high visibility role directing the efforts of a very wide subset of teams to take a new idea through the production creation process, through to a global launch for our next hardware product.

You will lead through positive and effective influence.  You will be responsible for facilitating innovative thinking and getting the teams to push the limits of the “art of the possible” while ensuring that we are delivering awesome product experiences that hit target dates, schedules and feature sets.  As the owner of a given product or category you will be the voice of the team to entire company.

About You

Our band is large. And while there’s plenty of room for all kinds of personalities and skill sets to succeed, there are certain qualities that will help you thrive here.

Like a never-accept-less work ethic. An exceptionally low ego-to-talent ratio (none of the first, tons of the latter). A relentless craving to push past your limits and try new things. The smarts and the humble confidence to take on big challenges, make mistakes fast and early, embrace tough feedback, then recover quickly with fresh, startlingly perfect solutions. A fearless willingness to defend great work. And a tendency to totally geek out on music.

If this sounds like you, read on and let’s connect soon.

What You’ll Do

You will be working with colleagues throughout all levels of the company, and you must be comfortable working in the disciplines of product strategy, finance, marketing, engineering and design. If you’re right for this role, you are unquestionably a:

Product Champion:

You are an evangelist for the customer and for the product experience, and motivate the team around that vision.
You create strategies to help guide which products and experiences we deliver, then lead the creation of new hardware products.
You’ll define the functionality of new products – from a high-level product vision down to the smallest details.
You are personally driven by delivering superior quality and the best product experiences in the world.
You have an uncompromising team work ethic with a deep experience leading teams of product creators.

Innovator and Learner:

From a development perspective, you’ll create space for the teams to push the limits of what’s possible, but also keep them honest with guardrails that keep the product within timelines and budgets.
From a leadership perspective, you’ll always be testing and looking to keep our product strategies refined.
You have a proven ability to test and interweave young technology into experience and product roadmaps, without holding up entire programs. You are a master at innovating in real time.

Objective leader:

Your judgements will be grounded in a deep understanding of the market opportunities; our business, finances and strategies; and our long term vision for our Product Portfolio and the connected home.
You’ll always maintain a solid understanding of the competitive landscape.
You work closely with teams across regions and functions. You have a natural desire to be on the ground to see firsthand what’s happening.
You are able to make decisions around tradeoffs between features, experiences, cost and time such that the product development team continues to make progress.
You take on the “hard decisions” so that the teams can focus on their work. You don’t let them get spun up.
You have a natural ability to “see upcoming roadblocks” that the product team might encounter and then preemptively remove those roadblocks so the team can keep moving forward.

Your ability to create a deep belief in the teams and the organization that this is the right product for Sonos to build is key.
As you move through the development process, you can deliver effective, engaging and inspirational presentations in clear, simple ways. You take seriously the responsibility to help people understand “why” we’re building a product.
When it comes time for our global launch, you’re on the road with the Go-To-Market teams to launch the product with greatness.
People describe you as charismatic, compelling, and a calming force for good. You have always been told that you’re a natural leader.
Skills You’ll Need

15+ years’ experience in a Product Management or similar role, defining and leading the creation of consumer hardware and software products.

You have driven a complex product from concept through to launch, leading to $200m+ in sales.

You are driven by delivering superior quality and the best product experiences in the world.

Uncompromising team work ethic with a deep experience leading global teams of product creators.

Deep experience creating and leading long-term product roadmap development.

A drive for making and shipping awesome hardware and a passion for music; you deeply care about music and your experience listening to it.

Masters in Engineering/Business or related field.

You’re patient, curious, and decisive. You have an innate and strong ability to build trust. You’re well spoken, and can articulate complex ideas in simple ways. You’re self-aware and self-motivated.
