 Every day, SONOS turns ideas into beautiful product innovation. We have disclosed thousands of product ideas at Patent Offices around the world. Our patent portfolio was recently recognized by the IEEE as the second most powerful in consumer electronics. It includes over one thousand patents covering fundamental aspects of the SONOS experience, and it is growing at a pace of over 5 patents per week.
We are looking for a Patent Agent to join our cross-disciplinary IP team in promoting innovation at SONOS and developing our highly strategic patent portfolio by focusing on internal preparation and prosecution of some of our most impactful patent matters. This is a patent preparation and prosecution role for a candidate that is an exceptional writer, is highly technical, and has a passion for drafting new patent applications directed to inventions that are fundamental to the advancement of the SONOS experience today and in the future. The candidate will also be responsible for driving forward a number of ongoing processes and systems that are integral to the ongoing success of the IP group. A successful candidate will have experience in securing high-impact patents, a demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly-collaborative team setting, outstanding organizational and planning skills, a passion for developing and implementing systems and processes that underlie the long-term development of a world class patent portfolio, and a passion for technology and music.

What You’ll Do
  • Prepare exceptionally high quality patent applications with a focus on detail and technical thoroughness
  • Manage the preparation of multiple patent applications simultaneously with competing priorities to best drive value for Sonos
  • Work collaboratively with inventors to deeply understand technical details and to develop alternative embodiments
  • Prepare and review invention disclosures and advise on patentability
  • Prosecute a docket of U.S. patent applications directed to important SONOS product innovations
  • Work closely with SONOS’s IP team members to develop and execute on patent portfolio strategy
  • Interface with innovators across all SONOS groups regarding technical features, product details, and the patent process
  • Manage and drive multiple underlying systems and processes related to ongoing operation and success of team
  • Perform other duties as they arise
Skills You’ll Need
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • 2+ years patent prosecution experience within a law firm
  • Strong knowledge of USPTO and PCT regulations and systems
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a large preparation and prosecution docket
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Strong analytical, research, organizational, and management skills, detail-oriented and results-oriented
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication (both written and oral) skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in-house
  • Experience managing patent portfolio operations in-house
  • Experience practicing in-person at the USPTO as a patent examiner and/or prosecuting agent
  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or equivalent
